# Why The End Of The Year Is The Best Time To Audit Your Podcast

Downloads don’t tell the full story. Here’s how to audit your podcast before the year ends, with 10 questions to start and our free 50-question 360 Audit.

We are way into Q4 and at this time of year, your podcast deserves more than a quick look at download reports. That will not give you much information to work with on what you can improve in 2027. Here’s how to run a podcast audit now so you start the new year with a clear plan.

Every December, podcasters start asking the one question: was this a good year for my show? Most answer by taking a look at their downloads growth but the downloads don’t tell the full story. They don’t tell you why the growth happened or didn’t happen, or what to change next.

That’s what a podcast audit is for and there is no better moment to pencil it in your calendar.

## Why Audit Now

The end of the year gives you something you don’t have any other time: a full twelve months of data and a break to look at it. When working with podcasters, we avoid going straight into a plan before taking a step back, auditing the show, and developing a strategy.

Here are a few reasons why auditing is always a good idea:

- Twelve months of episodes means you can see which topics, guests and formats actually retained listeners.
- [Podtrac’s Listening data](https://analytics.podtrac.com/blog/2020/10/19/podcast-listening-outlook-the-holidays) shows listening tends to dip over Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, then picks back up, with the strongest listening of the season in early January. Auditing now means your fixes are going to be set in place just in time to make them shine when listeners are tuned in.
- If you want a listening app to notice your new season in January, your pitch has to land way ahead of the holidays. Apple asks podcasters to [submit pitches at least two weeks before the desired feature date](https://podcasters.apple.com/support/5467-editorial-curation), and the weeks around the holidays fill up fast.

**Pro Tip:** Block two half-days in your calendar between now and mid-December. One to answer audit questions honestly and another one to turn your answers into a plan.

## What A Podcast Audit Actually Is

A podcast audit is an honest check-in about every part of your show, from the motivation and idea behind it to how listeners can convert into clients. It’s a way to find the things holding back your growth.

When downloads plateau, most podcasters immediately think of marketing. More posts, more clips, maybe ads. Most times, the bottleneck can be something totally different: cover art that doesn’t match the show, a lack of engagement and CTAs to listeners, SEO that is not optimized, etc. Marketing will not fix it.

Before you start, get your numbers all in one place.

## 10 Podcasting Aspects To Audit

Our [360 Podcast Audit](https://pod.vision/360-audit) goes over ten areas of your show with fifty questions. Here are some examples from each to get you started.

**1. Concept, mission & positioning.** What’s the never-before-seen thing your show offers? If you can’t answer in one sentence, neither can a listening app editor or a new listener.

**2. Target audience.** Is your current audience who you set out to reach? Look at your top countries, your reviews and the people who message you.

**3. Content & format.** Do episodes open with a strong hook in the first minute? Open your last five episodes and listen to the first sixty seconds of each.

**4. Production & workflow.** Where do things slow down or fall apart most often? Guest booking, editing, show notes, publishing? Which step do you dread?

**5. Visual branding.** Does your cover art reflect your show’s tone today? Your cover is the first thing listeners see on a crowded app screen.

**6. Titles, SEO & show notes.** Have you researched what your ideal listener searches for? Titles that name the problem your listener has are easier to find.

**7. Growth & discoverability.** Have you pitched listening apps for a feature? [Editors plan collections around important moments](https://podglomerate.com/how-to-get-your-show-featured-on-podcast-apps/). Alternatively, a new season is the perfect news-worthy moment.

**8. Audience connection.** How do listeners currently reach you or engage back? Give them one clear, easy way in through a newsletter, for example.

**9. Monetization & conversion.** Where does the listener to client journey break down? For business owners, this is the question that matters the most.

**10. Metrics & goals.** What’s the single biggest bottleneck right now? After answering everything, one thing usually stands out. That will be your focus for the first quarter of next year.

**Pro Tip:** Answer every question in writing, even the uncomfortable ones. If you co-host or have a producer, have them answer separately, then compare. The places where your answers are different are often the most useful part of the whole exercise.

## The Bottomline

A plateau doesn’t mean your podcast should end or that you should go full in on marketing. It’s usually a sign that something fixable is holding it back. The end of the year gives you the data, the breathing room and headspace, and the fresh start to find it. If you audit your podcast in the next months and find the one thing holding back, you’ll have a crystal clear plan going into the new year.

Most podcasts grow slowly over time. An honest audit makes sure that growth is built on the right foundation.
